Add dimensions to a product photo, without uploading it

Choose where the image is going, add one product photo and draw dimension lines, labels, icons or a size table over it. The tool sizes the image for that destination and flags text that may be hard to read on a phone. Everything runs in your browser.

  • No upload — runs in your browser

  • Reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF; HEIC, TIFF too, more slowly where the browser can't open them itself
  • One photo, up to 100 MB
  • JPEG or PNG, up to 4096 px a side

Where will this image go?

The tool takes its canvas size, the controls it switches off and its guidance from what each destination states. You can change it at any time.

Why some destinations can't be chosen for this image

  • eBay: Not allowed. eBay's picture policy doesn't allow photos with added text, artwork or marketing material, on any photo of a listing. Measurement lines, labels and icons are added text and artwork.

eBay's own advice for showing size: if the size of the item isn't clear, add a photo with a coin or a ruler next to it.

  • Google Merchant Center: Risk of disapproval. Google says that adding post-production text, marketing callouts or graphics to an image will cause an image disapproval, and that additional images must meet the same requirements. Its pages don't say whether a plain measurement label is treated differently.

How to make a dimension image

  1. Choose where it is going

Pick a destination in the tool or in the table below. It sets the canvas size and shows that destination's guidance. A destination whose rules don't take added text or graphics is listed with its reason, but can't be chosen.

  2. Add your photo and the measurements

Drop in one photo, then add dimension lines, arrows, text labels, icons or a size table. Drag each one into place and type its length and unit: the label is written for you.

  3. Check it and export

Turn on the phone preview and fix anything the readability panel lists. Choose JPEG or PNG, press Export and download the image.

Dimension image rules by destination

What each destination covered here states about an image with added text and graphics: whether it may be used and where in the listing, the canvas this tool uses, the formats and file size, and what to avoid, each linked to the platform's own page. Values marked as this tool's own choice are not platform rules. Use a row to set that destination in the tool; a destination whose rules don't take such an image has no preset.

    • Amazon's image rules ban text, graphics and extra items on the main image, and text on the swatch image. None of the current Amazon help pages cited here bans a dimension image as one of the other images, and none permits it either; an Amazon staff post on the seller forums, which is not a help page, advises considering infographics in secondary images, such as ones that show the product's dimensions.

    • Use this as one of the additional images, not as the main image or the swatch: Amazon can suppress a main image that has text, a logo, graphics or a watermark, asks for the main image to show the product only once, and allows no text on a swatch.
    • Don't add reviews, star ratings, prices, shipping offers such as free shipping, website links, or Amazon logos and badge look-alikes: Amazon bans them in every image.
    • Keep the product large in the frame: Amazon can suppress any image where the product looks too small.
    • Amazon says images other than the main one may have a neutral or real-life background.
    • Amazon asks for JPEG files to be saved at the highest quality level.

Three choices that shape a dimension image

A dimension image answers one question, how big the item is, and a few choices decide how clearly it does.

  • Dimension linesSize table

Lines on the item, or a size table

A dimension line shows where each length is measured, right on the item. A size table lists several measurements in one place and stays clear where lines would cross each other or the product.

Draw lines for two or three lengths; add a table for more, or for a value the photo can't show, such as a weight.

  • One unitTwo units

    One unit or two

You type the length and choose its unit, and the label is written in this page's number format, for example 120 cm (47.2 in). Choose a second unit and the tool converts the length and adds it in brackets, so nothing is converted by hand.

Add a second unit when shoppers may think in the other system, such as inches as well as centimetres.

  • Small, on the photoLarger, on a box

Text that reads on a phone

Shoppers often see listing images on a phone, where text shrinks with the image. The tool lists text that would be smaller than 12 px on a screen 360 px wide, text on a box with too little contrast, and text over the photo with no box.

Turn on the phone preview and fix every listed label before you export.

What makes a dimension image work

Shoppers often can't tell an item's size from a photo alone. A dimension image puts the measurements on the item itself, so the answer is in the gallery and not only in the description. Use it as one of the additional images rather than the main one.

Measure the item the way the description states it, and use the same numbers in both places. Run each line along the edge it measures, and keep its label clear of the product.

Lines and labels read best on a plain, even background. If the photo's background is busy, replace it with a plain one first, then bring the photo back here.

Leave room around the item for the lines and labels. If the product is small in the frame, crop the photo so it fills more of it, keeping a margin for the measurements.

Limits worth knowing

  • Reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF. Also reads HEIC, TIFF, more slowly where the browser can't open them itself.
  • One photo of up to 100 MB. Up to 39 items on the image, and up to 8 rows in a size table. The exported image is at most 4096 px on each side.
  • From an animated image, only the first frame is used.
  • Nothing is kept between visits: leaving or reloading the page clears the photo and everything drawn on it, so download the image first.

Dimension image FAQ

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Your photo is read, annotated and exported in your browser, and it is never uploaded, stored or sent anywhere. The page does fetch its own code and typeface as you go: the HEIC and TIFF decoders load the first time a photo needs them, and the typeface's character sets load when a label first uses them. Your photo is never part of that.

Can a dimension image be my main image?

The table above shows, for each destination covered here, whether a dimension image may be used and where, with a link to the platform's own page. As a rule, keep the main image to the product on its own and use the dimension image as one of the additional images.

Why can't I choose eBay and Google Merchant Center as a destination?

eBay and Google Merchant Center state rules against text or graphics added to a listing photo, and a dimension image is exactly that. The tool still lists them, with the rule and a link to it, but offers no preset, so you don't build an image the destination's own rules speak against. The table above also shows any advice the platform gives for showing size instead.

Which units can I use?

Pick one from the unit list beside the length: Millimetres (mm), Centimetres (cm), Metres (m), Inches (in), and Feet (ft). The label is written in this page's number format, for example 120 cm (47.2 in), and you can add the same length in a second unit, in brackets. To show something else, such as a range, type your own text into the label.

How do I know the text is readable on a phone?

Turn on the phone preview in the toolbar to see the image 360 px wide, the way a shopper sees it on a small phone. The readability panel lists each piece of text that would be smaller than 12 px at that width, text on a box with too little contrast and text over the photo with no box; select one to fix it. These checks are this tool's own guidance, not a platform rule.

How many measurements can one image hold?

Up to 39 items in all: dimension lines, arrows, labels, icons and size tables together. A size table holds up to 8 rows. Delete an item to make room for another.

What size is the exported image?

With a destination chosen, the canvas starts at the size in the table above. With No destination it starts at 2000 × 2000 px. You can type any width and height from 200 to 4096 px or pick a shape, and export a JPEG or a PNG.

Why does the result say the photo is enlarged?

A photo drawn larger than its own pixels looks soft, and so does the product in it. The result says by how much, so you can use a larger photo, zoom out or choose a smaller canvas.
