How to merge PDF files

  1. Add your PDFs

Drop in at least 2 PDFs, up to 50 files. Each file is read as it arrives, so you see its page count, and a file with a password asks for it in its row.

  2. Put them in order

Move each file up or down, or sort the list by file name. The merged PDF follows the list from top to bottom.

  3. Merge and download

Press Merge. The tool copies every page into one new PDF and shows its page count and size before you download it. Change the list and merge again whenever you like.

What a merged PDF keeps, and what it doesn't

Merging copies every page of every file, in the order of the list, into one new PDF. The pages themselves are not changed: text stays selectable, images keep their quality, and each page keeps its size and rotation. Need only some pages of a file? Split it first and merge the part you keep.

What belongs to a whole document rather than to its pages doesn't come along: bookmarks and the outline. Form fields are flattened: they can't be filled in any more and digital signatures are no longer valid. What the file has drawn in its fields, such as typed-in values or a signature image, stays on the page; fields the file never drew come out empty. Links from one page to another keep working, because every page of every file is in the merged PDF.

A file that needs a password to open asks for it in its row, and Merge waits until the file is unlocked or removed. The password stays in this page and is never sent anywhere. The merged PDF has no password and none of the source files' limits on printing, copying or editing.

Your browser holds every file in memory while it works, which is why the tool takes up to 50 files and 300 MB in all. The merged file is about as large as the files you put in, because the pages are copied, not compressed again. If the merged file is too large to send, split it into smaller files.

Limits worth knowing

  • Reads PDF files only. A file of another kind is refused with its reason, and the others still load.
  • From 2 to 50 files, up to 200 MB each and 300 MB in all.
  • Bookmarks and the outline are not kept. Form fields are flattened: they can't be filled in any more and signatures are no longer valid. Values the file has drawn stay on the page; fields the file never drew come out empty. The merged file has no password or restrictions.
  • A file that can't be opened stays in the list with its reason, and Merge waits until you remove it.

Merge PDF FAQ

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. Your PDFs are read, merged and saved in your browser, and they are never uploaded, stored or sent anywhere. The page does fetch its own code as you go: the PDF code loads when you add the first file, and, where your browser can show page previews, they load their code and data files from this site when they are first drawn. Your files are never part of that.

How do I change the order of the files?

Use the up and down arrows on each row, or Sort by name to order the list by file name, with numbers in their natural order (2 before 10). The merged PDF follows the list from top to bottom.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

Yes. A PDF that needs a password to open asks for it in its row; enter it and the file is unlocked in your browser. A PDF that only limits printing, copying or editing opens without one. Either way, the merged PDF has no password and none of those limits.

Are bookmarks, forms and signatures kept?

Bookmarks and the document outline aren't. Form fields are flattened: they can't be filled in any more and digital signatures are no longer valid. What the file has drawn in its fields, such as typed-in values or a signature image, stays on the page; fields the file never drew come out empty. Links from one page to another keep working.

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

From 2 to 50 files, each up to 200 MB and 300 MB in all. Your browser holds the files in memory while it works, and the limits keep it from running out. For a larger set, merge it in parts.

Does merging lower the quality?

No. The pages are copied into the new file as they are, without being compressed again, so text stays sharp and selectable and images keep their quality. That's also why the merged file is about as large as the files you put in.

What happens if a file won't open?

It stays in the list with the reason: it isn't a PDF, it's damaged, or it uses an encryption the tool can't open. Merge waits until you remove it, so no file is ever left out without you knowing. Saving a damaged file again from the app that made it often fixes it.
