How the checks work, and their limits
Every result says how it was established, separately from whether it passed.
Measured
Read directly from the file: type, animation, transparency and pixel size.
Estimated
Sharpness, watermarks and borders are visual estimates. Size and orientation are measured exactly, but their effect on search is Etsy's guidance, so those results are labelled estimates too.
You check
Accuracy, ownership and listing-specific rules need your judgement. They stay on the report even when everything else passes.
What the checker can't see
- Estimates can be wrong both ways: product text, textures and styled backgrounds can set off a warning, and a real problem can slip past.
- The checker sees one image file. It can't see your listing, category, other photos, or whether this will be the first photo.
- Passing is not approval. Etsy can apply policies and reviews a browser check can't reproduce.

What does the Etsy listing image checker check?
It reads the file type, animation, transparency and pixel size and compares them with Etsy's published guidance, then estimates sharpness, watermarks or added text, and borders. It also lists the policy points you need to check yourself, such as whether you own the photo and whether it shows the exact item.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is decoded and analyzed in your browser and is not sent to a server. The page itself still loads its code over the network, like any website.
Does passing mean Etsy will accept my photo?
No. The checker applies Etsy's published image guidance to one file. Etsy can still apply policies, reviews and listing context that a browser check can't see.
Which files can I check?
The checker reads JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and AVIF; TIFF, SVG, and HEIC only if your browser can decode them. It also checks files Etsy doesn't accept, such as WebP, and reports them as a required fix. Files can be up to 100 MB.
Why are some results marked Estimated?
Sharpness, watermark and border results come from visual estimates that can be wrong: product text, textures and styled backgrounds can set them off. Size and orientation are measured exactly, but their effect on search is Etsy's guidance. Check estimated results by eye.
Why does orientation matter for the first photo?
Etsy recommends a landscape or square first photo with space around the product, so search thumbnails don't crop it. The same Etsy page also advises against square crops, so landscape is the safer choice.
What should I fix first?
Start with required fixes: they break an Etsy rule, such as an unsupported format or an animated GIF. Then work through the warnings, starting with the suggestions at the top of “What to do next”. Finally, go through the items to review yourself.
How do I check a fixed image?
Edit the image in your editor or one of our tools, save it, then choose the saved file here with “Replace image”. Images don't move between tools automatically.
