How to convert a GIF to PNG

What you get in each PNG
A GIF is not stored as a stack of finished pictures. Three things decide what a saved frame looks like and how it is named.

To save space, most animated GIFs store only the part of each frame that changed, often with transparent holes the frame before shows through. A splitter that saves those pieces as they are gives you fragments. This tool plays the GIF up to each frame and saves the whole picture on screen at that moment, at the GIF's full width and height.
Use the frames straight away as stills, thumbnails or the frames of a new animation: none of them needs putting back together.

Where a GIF frame is transparent, the PNG is transparent too: nothing is filled in with white or black behind it. A GIF pixel is either fully transparent or fully visible, so the PNG's edges are exactly as hard as the GIF's, with nothing smoothed or added.
Placing a frame on a coloured page or over another picture? Its transparent areas show what is behind them, as they did in the GIF.
Frames in timeNumbered files Frame numbers and timing
Frames are counted from 1 in the order the GIF plays them, and each file name ends with its number, padded to at least 3 digits so the files sort in order: animation-frame-001.png. A PNG stores no timing, so when you save one frame, its row says how long that frame shows in the GIF. Browsers show a frame set to 10 ms or less for 100 ms, and that is the time the row states.
Making a new animation from the frames? Keep the numbered order, and note the delay of any frame that shows longer.
Why these frames look complete when other splitters give fragments
Most tools that make GIFs save only what changed from one frame to the next, and some leave the unchanged parts transparent so the frame before shows through. That keeps the GIF small, but a frame on its own is then a fragment: a small rectangle, or a picture full of holes.
This tool builds each frame the way a browser plays the GIF. Starting from the first frame, it lays every later one over what is already there, clearing parts where the GIF says to, and saves the whole picture. Every PNG has the GIF's full width and height and shows what the GIF shows when it reaches that frame.
Going the other way? After editing the frames, build a GIF from your images again, with the order and the delays you choose.
A PNG keeps every colour of the frame and its transparency. If you need a JPEG or a WebP instead, convert the PNG; bear in mind that a JPEG has no transparency.
Limits worth knowing
- Reads GIF files, animated or still: up to 20 per batch and 250 MB in total.
- A GIF can have up to 1,000 frames, 4.2 megapixels per frame and 300 megapixels across all its frames. Saving all frames of one GIF stops at 50 megapixels in total; the first frame or a frame number has no such limit.
- Each PNG is a still with no timing stored in it, and a GIF with a single frame gives one PNG under the GIF's own name.
- Transparent areas stay transparent with hard edges, because a GIF pixel is either fully transparent or fully visible.

Are my GIFs uploaded anywhere?
No. The frames are decoded and saved as PNG right here in your browser, and your GIFs never leave this device. The page loads parts of its own code when they are needed: the frame extractor when you add your first GIF, and a ZIP library the first time you download a ZIP, which every all-frames download is. None of that carries your images.
How do I extract every frame of a GIF?
Keep All frames (ZIP) selected and add the GIF. Every frame is saved as a PNG, and the row's download gives one ZIP, named like animation-frames.zip, with the frames numbered in playing order inside. With several GIFs, Download all puts each GIF's frames in a folder of its own.
How do I save just one frame of a GIF?
Choose First frame, or choose Frame number and type the frame you want, counted from 1. You get a single PNG. A number past the last frame saves the last frame, and the row tells you how many frames the GIF has.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
If the GIF has one, yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG, with nothing painted behind them. Only what the GIF itself leaves transparent is see-through: a GIF with a solid background gives PNGs with that same background.
Why do my frames look different from another GIF splitter's?
Many splitters save each frame as it is stored in the file, and GIFs usually store only the part that changed. This tool assembles each frame as it appears while the GIF plays, so you get the full picture every time, at the GIF's full size.
How are the PNG files named?
Each file takes the GIF's name, the word frame and the frame number padded to at least 3 digits, such as animation-frame-001.png, so the files sort in playing order. A GIF with a single frame gives one PNG with the GIF's own name.
Can I convert several GIFs to PNG at once?
